Giulio Ceppi's Havana sky photos at Triennale Milano fund Cuban design exchange

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Architect and designer Giulio Ceppi presents 'El ultimo cielo' at Triennale Milano from May 24 to June 4, 2017, as part of Photofestival. The installation features 30 photographs of Havana's sky mounted on original Cuban cigar boxes. The images, shot with a Pentax 645 on slide film during a trip to Cuba, will be auctioned by Finarte on May 31 to fund an exchange program between Instituto Superior de Disegno de Cuba and Politecnico di Milano, organized by nonprofit Cubeart. Proceeds will bring three Cuban students to Italy for training. Ceppi noted Cuba's strong artistic tradition but nascent design sector, lacking industrial support. The first Cuban Design Biennial, titled 'Design and Prosperity,' aimed to position the island as a regional hub. Ceppi believes digital technologies and 3D printing can bypass traditional industrial stages. One photograph references Daniel Buren's site-specific work for the 12th Bienal de La Habana, which colored doors in Old Havana and Calle San Lazaro.
