Giulio Base Appointed Artistic Director of Torino Film Festival
Actor and director Giulio Base has been named the new artistic director of the Torino Film Festival, taking over for the 42nd edition in 2024. The 41st edition in November 2023 will be led by Steve Dalla Casa. Born in Turin in 1964, Base holds degrees in Modern Literature (with a thesis in Film History and Criticism) and Theology, and is a graduate of Vittorio Gassman's Bottega Teatrale. With over 40 years in cinema as a director, screenwriter, producer, and actor, he has directed 29 films and appeared in 45, working with Ridley Scott and Nanni Moretti. He is a David di Donatello juror and since 2021 a member of the Italian Ministry of Culture's Film Classification Commission. In 2022, Alberto Barbera appointed him to preside over the 'Classics' jury at the Venice Film Festival. His recent directorial works include 'Bar Giuseppe' (2020), 'Un cielo stellato sopra il ghetto di Roma' (2021), 'Il maledetto' (2022), and 'À la Recherche' (2023 release), the latter shot in a historic villa near Rome for the centenary of Marcel Proust's death, paying homage to Luchino Visconti and 1970s Italian cinema. The festival, founded in 1982 as the International Festival of Young Cinema, has previously been led by Alberto Barbera, Nanni Moretti, Gianni Amelio, and Emanuela Martini.
