Giuliano Macca on Light and Darkness in 'Etere' at GOWEN Contemporary
Italian figurative painter Giuliano Macca (born 1988 in Noto, Sicily) presents his first international solo show, 'Etere,' at GOWEN Contemporary in Geneva, running until February 15, 2025. The exhibition marks his return to solo shows after three years, following his last exhibition in Rome. The title refers to the Greek primordial deity of light and father of time, embodying the show's exploration of contrasts between light and darkness, myth and reality. Macca describes the work as an 'Odyssey' populated by fragmented Cubist bodies, shimmering blues, poetic violets, and reverberating dreams. The project began in Amsterdam, where Macca developed his method, and was completed in Sicily, whose rural, baroque, and mythical atmosphere deeply influenced the works. Macca cites the myth of Typhon imprisoned under Mount Etna as a metaphor for the volcanic energy of his homeland. He uses his signature Bic pen technique to create passionate, high-contrast paintings. In an interview, Macca discusses his relationship with time, describing it as both fascinating and dismaying, and sees art as a tool for immortality. He acknowledges influences from great masters and personal experiences, aiming to create a new contemporary language. Macca currently lives in Verona and runs the artistic dissemination project Neodecadentismo.
