Giulia Piscitelli's 'Una Nuvola Come Tappeto' at Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Giulia Piscitelli (born 1965, Naples) presents her exhibition 'Una Nuvola Come Tappeto' at the Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro in Naples. The show features installations created before 2019, including 'Naso' (1997), exhibited for the first time. Central to the exhibition are 21 kneelers upholstered with industrial Muslim prayer rugs, inspired by Erri De Luca's translation of Psalm 105 from the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia. Piscitelli's work 'Planeta' is made from a bulletproof vest's Kevlar layers, questioning the origins and purposes of both the vest and the jewels of San Gennaro, such as the Mitra weighing 18 kg with 3,326 diamonds, 198 emeralds, and 168 rubies. The exhibition also includes gilded maps (aureoles on geographical maps) that blend historical and political changes with ancient painting techniques. Piscitelli aims to erase the boundary between sacred and profane, emphasizing that 'sacred is life.' The public is invited to touch the kneelers, often used by children as play. The exhibition is curated by Arianna Rosica.
