Giulia Cenci's Post-Apocalyptic Sculptures at SpazioA, Pistoia

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Giulia Cenci (b. 1988) presents a solo exhibition at SpazioA in Pistoia, running through mid-January. The gallery occupies two spaces at Via Amati 13 and 9. In the main room, visitors encounter obstacles from the entrance: cables block access, and hanging growths on metal wires reveal indecipherable yet suggestive forms—car parts, bones, fossils. Guided by art historian Elena Del Lungo, the experience unfolds in the back of SpazioA, where Cenci's quasi-post-apocalyptic shapes interact with the window and vaults of the historic building. The installation engages the body: viewers must climb over, crouch, and watch their steps. Materials include unusual organic and inorganic substances: bone black, volcanic ash, marble dust, clay, metal bars, polyurethane foam, and possibly onion skin. The initial atmosphere recalls a Pistoian Blade Runner, but the final effect is engaging and almost playful.
