Giulia Andreani creates cover for Artribune Magazine #44

Giulia Andreani, a Venetian-born painter based in Paris, has created the cover image for the new issue of Artribune Magazine. Titled "Out of the box," the work is a self-portrait that reflects her relationship with art history and its male tutelary figures, blending irony and deference. Andreani, who studied painting in Venice and earned a degree in contemporary art history in Paris, recently completed a residency at the French Academy in Rome – Villa Medici. Her practice involves extensive research in libraries and archives, focusing on pre-digital materials like letters, forms, and photographs. She describes her paintings as deceptive: seductive from afar but unsettling up close. Andreani works primarily in watercolor and acrylic, often using Payne's gray, a color invented by 17th-century watercolorist William Payne. Her subjects range from famous figures to anonymous individuals, aiming to evoke the presence of the forgotten and challenge historiographical hierarchies.
