Gisèle Vienne's 'Kindertotenlieder' Merges Drone Metal and Theatre at Théâtre de la Bastille
In April 2008, Gisèle Vienne presented 'Kindertotenlieder' at Théâtre de la Bastille in Paris, a performance blending theatre with the drone metal music of Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O)))) and electronic noise of Peter Rehberg. The piece, based on a text by Dennis Cooper, explores themes of death and violence through a snow-covered stage, fog, and a cast of puppets and performers. O'Malley and Rehberg performed live, their music shaping the dramatic tension. The collaboration led to the formation of the band KTL, which released four albums on Mego and recorded a score for Victor Sjöström's 1920 silent film 'The Phantom Carriage'. The performance was originally created at Le Quartz in Brest in February 2007 and later shown in Lyon and Bordeaux.
