Giovanotti Mondani Meccanici computer comics collected in new book

publication · 2026-04-27

The Italian collective Giovanotti Mondani Meccanici (GMM), founded in 1984 by Antonio Glessi and Andrea Zingoni, created the first known computer comics. Their work, published in Frigidaire magazine from 1984 to 1987, is now being collected in a single volume titled 'GMM – Computer Comics 1984-1987', edited by Francesco Spampinato and published by Nero Editions as part of the Prima o Mai crowdfunding project. The comics were made using an Apple II and an early graphics tablet, featuring a trio of men in black in surreal, sci-fi adventures. The book restores original colors from the computer screens, which had faded in the 1980s print versions. In conjunction with the book release, Mannequin Records will reissue a vinyl and cassette soundtrack by Maurizio Dami (aka Alexander Robotnik), the third GMM member. The project runs from November 23, 2020 to February 6, 2021.
