Giovanni Michelucci: The Solitary Architect of Florence

Giovanni Michelucci (1891–1990) was an Italian architect whose extensive career lasted almost a century, transitioning from modernism to postmodernism. Among his notable works are the Santa Maria Novella station in Florence, completed in 1935, and the Church of the Autostrada in Campi Bisenzio, finished in 1964. The station faced criticism for its perceived disrespect towards the nearby church and reflects elements of Dutch architecture. The Church of the Autostrada is characterized by its precarious support, giving it an unstable appearance. Michelucci, recognized for his independent approach, often had a challenging personality, which affected his relationships with students such as Leonardo Ricci and Leonardo Savioli. He also designed various buildings, including distinctive churches and a provincial post office in Florence's Santa Croce area. His plans for post-war reconstruction in Florence were mostly unfulfilled.
