Giovanni Gastel's final film portrait of Compasso d'Oro winner Francesco Binfaré premieres at La Scala

A film portrait by photographer Giovanni Gastel and Uberto Frigerio captures designer Francesco Binfaré, winner of the Compasso d'Oro alla Carriera. The film, one of Gastel's last works before his death in March 2021, was produced for Edra, the Italian sofa company for which both Gastel and Binfaré have created iconic pieces. Binfaré, known for his soft design and visionary furniture, discusses his work and philosophy in the black-and-white film, which premiered at Teatro alla Scala during the last Salone del Mobile. The project was curated by Silvana Annicchiarico, who wrote about the encounter in Domus. The film not only explores Binfaré's innovation in sofa design—calling the sofa "a portrait of contemporary man"—but also serves as a self-portrait of Gastel's ability to capture his subject with depth and intimacy.
