Giovanni Gastel retrospective 'Rewind' opens at Palazzo Citterio in Milan

Palazzo Citterio in Milan hosts 'Giovanni Gastel. Rewind', a major retrospective of the late photographer, on view from January 30 to July 26, 2026. Curated by Uberto Frigerio in collaboration with La Grande Brera, the exhibition presents over 250 works spanning Gastel's career, from his first magazine covers in 1977 to his iconic 'Fondi oro' series and fashion photography. The show also features previously unseen private writings and personal tools, offering insight into his poetic vision. Gastel, a nephew of Luchino Visconti, was known for his elegant, empathetic portraiture and pioneering use of digital retouching in the 1990s. The display, designed by Gianni Fiore, includes portraits of Barack Obama (2017) and Ettore Sottsass (2007). Angelo Crespi, Director General of Pinacoteca di Brera, Palazzo Citterio, and Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense, praised Gastel's humanity. The catalog is published by Allemandi.
