Giovanni Gaggia's Dawn Performance at Ancona's Ancient Port

artist · 2026-05-05

On June 9, 2017, at dawn, artist Giovanni Gaggia (born 1977 in Pergola) performed "Quello che doveva accadere/INVENTARIUM" at the Porto Antico di Ancona, between the Arco di Traiano and the Arco del Vanvitelli. The performance is part of the larger project Inventarium, an artistic meditation on the Strage di Ustica, exploring memory, pain, and resilience. Ancona was chosen as it is the hometown of Aldo Davanzali, founder and president of Itavia, the airline involved in the Ustica disaster. After the tragedy, Itavia collapsed and Davanzali died in poverty in 2005, becoming an additional victim. During the ritual, Gaggia sat under the Arco di Traiano, embroidering a leaden, luminescent tapestry with a thread of memory. The ephemeral action is documented in a video directed by Michele Alberto Sereni with music by Stefano Spada. An exclusive preview was released by Artribune on the 37th anniversary of the Ustica massacre (June 27) and the 10th anniversary of the Museo per la Memoria di Ustica in Bologna. The full video will premiere on July 21 at Demanio Marittimo.Km 278.
