Giovanni Fattori Bicentennial Exhibition Opens in Livorno with 220 Works
A major exhibition celebrating the 200th anniversary of Giovanni Fattori's birth has opened at Villa Mimbelli, home of the Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori in Livorno. The show, curated by Vincenzo Farinella, presents 220 works—many from the museum's own collection, others on loan from public institutions and private collections, including paintings unseen for decades or centuries. The chronological layout traces Fattori's stylistic evolution from early Romantic subjects to his Macchiaioli phase and later experiments that challenged perspective and figure relationships. The exhibition aims to promote Fattori's art internationally, where he remains little known. Highlights include military-themed works like 'Battaglia di Magenta,' empathetic depictions of laborers and animals, and landscapes of Livorno, Castiglioncello, and Maremma. Notable pieces include 'Gli eccidi di Livorno' (1859-60), 'Soldati francesi del '59,' 'Don Chisciotte' (1875-76), 'L'ambulanza' (1883), and his final unfinished painting (1908, catalog no. 1443). The show also features works by contemporaries and later artists such as Plinio Nomellini, Lorenzo Viani, Amedeo Modigliani, and Giorgio Morandi. The iconic 'Muro bianco' (1874) concludes the visit, after which the museum will be reinstalled.
