Giovanni Chiaramonte retrospective 'Realismo infinito' opens at Museo Diocesano Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Museo Diocesano in Milan will host a major retrospective of Giovanni Chiaramonte (1948–2023), one of Italy's greatest landscape photographers, from November 16, 2024 to February 9, 2025. Titled 'Realismo infinito' and curated by Corrado Benigni, the exhibition features 40 images spanning three sections—Italia, Europe, Americas—covering over two decades of his work (1980s–2000s). Chiaramonte's photography explores the relationship between place and destiny in Western civilization, rooted in the theological and aesthetic tradition of von Balthasar and the Eastern Church. He began photographing in the late 1960s, moving from figurative to abstract and conceptual forms, influenced by Pop Art and Conceptual Art. He founded and directed photography series for Jaca Book, Federico Motta Editore, S.E.I., Edizioni della Meridiana, and Ultreya, and taught History and Theory of Photography at IULM, the Faculty of Architecture in Palermo, and the Master of 'Forma'. He received an honorary degree in Architecture from the University of Palermo and the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Prize for Photography in 2006. Chiaramonte participated in Expo Shanghai 2010 with the project 'Nascosto in prospettiva'. The exhibition is supported by Fondazione Banca Popolare di Milano and Fondazione Fiera Milano, and includes photographs commissioned for the 2011 Evangeliario Ambrosiano. Accompanying events include talks, guided tours, and workshops.
