Giovanni Anselmo: From Stromboli to the Infinite

Giovanni Anselmo (1934–2023) abandoned painting in 1965 after an epiphany atop Stromboli volcano, where he experienced his shadow dissolving into infinity. This led him to reject representation and instead present reality through materials and actions. His early works, like an untitled 1966 iron bar, revealed instability and challenged fixed structures. He became a key figure in Arte Povera, though his career defied labels. Anselmo explored gravity, magnetism, time, and orientation, using materials like granite, lettuce, and anthracite.
