Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel frescoes available online in ultra-high definition
Haltadefinizione, an Italian tech company specializing in cultural heritage digitization, has made available online for free the complete cycle of Giotto's frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. The project involved capturing over 14,000 photographs covering more than 700 square meters of painted surface, processed over a year using gigapixel technology. Users can explore the frescoes through a 360-degree multimedia viewer, zooming in on minute details such as tears in the Massacre of the Innocents or the scroll held by the prophetess Anna. The frescoes were commissioned by Enrico degli Scrovegni around 1303-1305, the year the chapel was consecrated. This initiative follows Haltadefinizione's earlier digitization of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper in 2007. In 2019, the company signed an agreement with the Italian Ministry for the valorization and promotion of state collections, leading to collaborations with the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, the Pinacoteca di Brera, and the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica in Rome. The company's database now includes over 600 images. The digitization was carried out with the permission of the Municipality of Padua.
