Giotto and the Giotteschi: Umbrian Trecento Revolution at Perugia's Galleria Nazionale

To mark the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis of Assisi's death, the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria in Perugia presents "Giotto e san Francesco. Una rivoluzione nell'Umbria del Trecento," curated by Veruska Picchiarelli and Emanuele Zappasodi. The exhibition assembles international loans to stage an unprecedented dialogue between Giotto and Umbrian and Sienese Giotteschi. It opens with Giotto's early works, including the Madonna di San Giorgio alla Costa and the Polittico di Badia, then traces the fresco decoration of the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi, where Giotto arrived around 1290 to paint the Stories of Isaac and later the Storie di San Francesco. The show also explores the Gothic turn in the Lower Basilica, featuring works by Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti, and highlights lesser-known masters such as the Maestro di Cesi, the Maestro della Croce di Gubbio, Palmerino di Guidi (identified as the Maestro di Santa Chiara), the Maestro di Figline, and Puccio Capanna. A precious fragment of Giotto's Testa femminile from the Celestial Glory is displayed alongside stained-glass windows. The exhibition runs until June 14, 2026.
