Giosetta Fioroni's 'Speculum' at M77 Gallery Explores the Gaze
M77 Gallery in Milan presents 'Giosetta Fioroni – Speculum. Guardare, guardarsi, esser guardata', a solo exhibition examining the power of the gaze and female identity. Featuring about 50 works, including the celebrated 'Argenti' silver paintings, 16mm films, self-portraits, and photographic portraits by Ugo Mulas and Tano Festa, the show spans from the 1960s to today. The title references the speculum, a medical device that 'deforms' and 'illuminates deepest femininity', according to curator Cristiana Perrella. Fioroni, born in Rome in 1932, was the only female artist of the historic Scuola di Piazza del Popolo. Her work deconstructs female stereotypes, transforming women from objects of the gaze into active subjects. A key sculpture, 'Giosetta con Giosetta a nove anni' (2002), shows the artist holding hands with her childhood self, bridging past and present. The exhibition is organized in three sections, creating a psychological and cultural narrative.
