Giorgio Musinu Named Talento di Genova 2020
Giorgio Musinu, born in Genoa in 1990, received the Talento di Genova 2020 award on October 12 at Teatro Carlo Felice during Columbus Day celebrations. He was the only artist among ten winners selected by an eleven-expert committee coordinated by Manuela Arata. Musinu previously won first prizes at the 2017 NTU International Photography Biennial (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) and the 2017 Biennale d'Arte Contemporanea di Anzio e Nettuno. His photography features suspended, frozen moments, often in liminal spaces between nature and culture, industrial ruins and mass production. His 2016 work 'The End' shows the artist from behind about to turn a knob that could signify humanity's extinction. His first solo exhibition 'Molloy' (after Samuel Beckett's 1951 novel) was held in January 2018 at Sala Dogana, Palazzo Ducale, Genoa. Musinu completed the Master di alta formazione sull'immagine contemporanea at Fondazione Fotografia Modena in 2018. He describes art as 'oxygen' for his torments and believes it should challenge common thought, showing uncomfortable truths. He creates self-portraits in abandoned places using camera, tripod, and remote control. During the pandemic, he has been producing sketches on the current period.
