Giorgio Morandi retrospective Time Suspended II opens in New York
A major Giorgio Morandi exhibition, Giorgio Morandi – Time Suspended II, opens on September 26 in a historic townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side, running through November 26. Curated by Marilena Pasquali and gallerist Mattia De Luca, the show features 60 works across six rooms on two floors, including still lifes, landscapes, and flower paintings. It expands on a 2022 Rome exhibition at Galleria Mattia de Luca. Key loans include 15 works from the Giovanardi collection, a group of works owned by Morandi's friend Giovanardi, alongside pieces from private and museum collections never before shown in the US. The exhibition covers Morandi's career from experimental works of 1913 through Cubist and metaphysical phases to mature paintings of the 1960s. The last major Morandi show in New York was at the Metropolitan Museum in 2008 with 110 works. De Luca expressed joy and anxiety about the comparison but noted positive early feedback from industry professionals, collectors, and curators after the announcement on The Art Newspaper. Pasquali, founder and director of the Centro Studi Giorgio Morandi in Bologna, previously described Morandi's ability to fuse reason and sentiment in seemingly neutral yet deeply human compositions.
