Giorgio Morandi Retrospective Opens at Fundación Mapfre Madrid
Fundación Mapfre in Madrid presents a major retrospective of Giorgio Morandi (1890–1964), running until January 9, 2022, before traveling to Casa Pedrera in Barcelona from February 3 to May 22, 2022. Curated by Beatrice Avanzi and Daniela Ferrari of the Mart in Trento and Rovereto, with consultancy from Alessia Masi of the Museo Morandi in Bologna, the exhibition features 106 small- and medium-format works spanning Morandi's career. Loans come from the Museo Morandi, Brera, Centre Pompidou, Thyssen-Bornemisza, Fondazione Magnani-Rocca, and Collezione Giovanardi, among others. The show includes a section titled "Risonanza infinita" pairing Morandi with 26 works by 20 contemporary artists such as Bertozzi & Casoni, Luigi Ontani, Alfredo Alcaín, Edmund de Waal, Tony Cragg, Carlo Benvenuto, Franco Vimercati, Catherina Wagner, Joel Meyerowitz, Tacita Dean, and the Taiana twins. Highlights include early cubist compositions, landscapes, still lifes, and a selection of etchings. Morandi taught at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna from 1930.
