Giorgio Morandi Masterpieces from Magnani-Rocca Foundation at David Zwirner New York
David Zwirner Gallery in New York is hosting 'Giorgio Morandi: Masterpieces from the Magnani – Rocca Foundation,' a major exhibition of over 50 works spanning six decades of the Italian painter's career, curated by art historian Alice Ensabella. The show runs until February 22, 2025, and is among the largest Morandi exhibitions in New York since the 2008 Metropolitan Museum retrospective. Highlights include 'Natura morta metafisica' (1918), a rare metaphysical period piece from his involvement with the journal 'Valori Plastici' alongside Carlo Carrà and Giorgio de Chirico; 'Autoritratto' (1925); 'Natura morta con il cestino del pane' (1921); and 'Il ponte sul Savena a Bologna' (1912 etching). All works come from the Fondazione Magnani-Rocca in Mamiano, Parma, whose collection was assembled over 20 years by critic, musicologist, and writer Luigi Magnani (1906–1984) in close collaboration with the artist. Ensabella notes that Magnani's unique friendship with Morandi is reflected in the collection, which aims to represent every subject, technique, and period of the artist's career.
