Giorgio de Chirico's 'Back to the Future' at GAM Torino Explored on Sky Arte

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The exhibition 'Giorgio de Chirico. Ritorno al Futuro' at GAM Torino draws its title from Robert Zemeckis's cult film. It traces the career of the Greek-born artist, emphasizing his influence on later generations as a pillar of Metaphysical art. A documentary from the 'Exhibition' series airs Thursday, June 20 on Sky Arte, delving into the show's themes, notably the little-known bond between de Chirico and Andy Warhol, captured in a photograph by Gianfranco Gorgoni. The exhibition features 43 paintings by de Chirico, lent by the Fondazione Giorgio e Elisa de Chirico, alongside works by artists active from the 1960s to today: Warhol, Tano Festa (Scuola di Piazza del Popolo), Mimmo Paladino, Vanessa Beecroft, filmmaker Tim Burton, and video game creator Fumito Ueda. De Chirico's world of everyday objects—boxes, toys, easels, set squares—becomes a pop repertoire for new generations. Curators Lorenzo Canova and Riccardo Passoni (GAM director) speak, along with Pietro Folena (president of MetaMorfosi, a promoter of the show). Luigi Ontani, a great admirer of de Chirico and Alberto Savinio, discusses how he adapted de Chirico's self-portrait for two of his own: one in the 1970s and another in 2011.
