Giorgio Andreotta Calò to Walk 30 Days from Venice to Amatrice
Artist Giorgio Andreotta Calò will begin a 30-day solo walk from Venice to Amatrice on the night of August 24, 2019, exactly three years after the 2016 earthquake that devastated central Italy. The performance, titled Senza Titolo (Gloria), is part of the Meridiani project launched by Rome's Nomas Foundation, which aims to enhance historical and landscape heritage through contemporary art. The project won the Regione Lazio Arte Sui Cammini grant and also includes artists Chiara Camoni and Francesco Arena. Calò will walk along the Gloria fault line, a geological fracture running along the Apennine chain, consulting geologists and experts. Nomas Foundation president and curator Raffaella Frascarelli describes the walk as a gesture of solidarity with earthquake-affected populations and a personal ritual with collective consequences. The Meridiani program seeks to transform the Via Francigena into a symbolic space of solidarity and cultural sharing, with the route recently nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status.
