Giorgio Andreotta Calò installs moth cocoon aviary at Palazzo Bentivoglio

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Palazzo Bentivoglio in Bologna presents Giorgio Andreotta Calò's installation 'ΊΚΑΡΟΣ (Icarus)' (2020-21, 30'23") with eight screening nights from June 2025. The artist built a temporary aviary containing dozens of moth cocoons in a recently acquired, unrestored garden corner. The film documents a moth colony reestablished by the artist in a former butterfly pavilion at the Emmen zoological complex in the Netherlands. Entomologist Enzo Moretto and autodidact Bart Coppens contributed to the project, linking the master-apprentice relationship and lepidopteran metamorphosis to the myth of Daedalus and Icarus. Screenings run Wednesday to Saturday, 8-11 PM until June 21, 2025. The work explores liminal space between day and night, reality and myth, flight and fall.
