Gio Ponti Museum to Open Inside Milan's ADI Design Museum
A new permanent museum dedicated to Gio Ponti will open within the ADI Design Museum in Milan by the end of 2026. The announcement was made during the press conference for the exhibition 'In-Play. Design for Sport,' part of the Milano Cortina 2026 Cultural Olympiad. The project, funded by Regione Lombardia, will involve expanding the museum's exhibition space by adding a mezzanine level. Director Andrea Cancellato stated that the museum will be a dynamic space that evolves over time, serving as a research hub. Ponti, who died in 1979 at age 87, was a founding member of ADI and creator of the Compasso d'Oro award. His iconic works include the Pirelli Tower and the Superleggera chair for Cassina. The museum fills a gap in Milan, where several Ponti buildings exist, such as his home on Via Dezza and the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi al Fopponino. Recent reissues of Ponti designs by Molteni&C in 2025 demonstrate his enduring relevance.
