Gillo Pontecorvo retrospective at Teatro dei Dioscuri in Rome

exhibition · 2026-05-05

A decade after his death, Rome honors filmmaker Gillo Pontecorvo (Pisa, 1919 – Rome, 2016) with a retrospective exhibition at the Teatro dei Dioscuri al Quirinale. Curated by Claudio Libero Pisano and co-curated by Pontecorvo's son Simone, the show presents a chronological timeline of photographs, notes, videos, and sound recordings, many previously unseen. It highlights Pontecorvo's life as a partisan (code name Barnaba), his exile in France where he met Pablo Picasso, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Igor Stravinsky, and his political activism in the Italian Communist Party. The exhibition also covers unrealized film projects, including one with Marlon Brando about Native Americans, and emphasizes his collaborations with screenwriter Franco Solinas. Key films such as The Battle of Algiers, Kapò, Queimada, and Ogro are featured. The event is supported by MiBACT, ABC of Regione Lazio, Istituto Luce, Associazione Gillo Pontecorvo, Casa del Cinema, Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, and Museo Nazionale del Cinema.
