Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder on Queer Horror and 'Camp Miasma'

Jane Schoenbrun's third feature film, 'Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma', is a metatextual queer slasher starring Gillian Anderson and Hannah Einbinder. The film follows Kris (Einbinder), a young filmmaker reviving an '80s slasher franchise that sparked her sexual awakening, who encounters original final girl Billy (Anderson) at a summer camp. Anderson and Einbinder discussed the film with CULTURED ahead of its August 7 release. Anderson, known for roles in 'The X Files' and 'Sex Education', and author of 'Want' and 'More', brings her queer icon status. Einbinder, from 'Hacks', makes her feature debut. The film's sex scenes were meticulously choreographed with an intimacy coordinator; Schoenbrun noted it was their first sex scene. Einbinder cited influences from psychosexual films like 'Secretary', 'The Duke of Burgundy', and 'Bound', including a tattoo Easter egg referencing Gina Gershon. Anderson, who avoids horror due to a bad experience, said 'Miasma' is only the second horror film she's seen. The film releases August 7.
