Gilles Touyard's Opera Bianca at Centre Pompidou

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Gilles Touyard, known for his inflatable sculptures called Enflures—gaseous copies of clothing or famous artworks—has undertaken the ambitious creation of an opera. He designed Opera Bianca in collaboration with composer Brice Pauset and writer Michel Houellebecq. On the occasion of its presentation at the Centre Georges-Pompidou, the artist recounts the beginnings of this adventure and explains its mobile forms and musical choices. He answers questions from Jean-Yves Jouannais about the choice of librettist, the two opposing tensions between furniture, trivial objects, and artisanal elements on one side and technical feats on the other, the modes of movement specific to each piece, and the desire to seat the spectator.
