Gili Mocanu's Elusive Paintings Explore Cosmos and Mirror

Gili Mocanu, born in Constanța in 1971 and based in Bucharest, is a Romanian painter whose work resists easy classification. Emerging after 2000, he was part of the deInterese group, a precursor to gallery Posibila, yet his practice remains singular. His painting is fed by compression, rhythm, fragmentation, and coded intensity, influenced by his parallel work as a poet and electronic musician. Mocanu's recent solo exhibition 'As If' at Arsmonitor in 2024 featured works like 'Revera 1' (2020–24), which combines hard edges and curving lines with soft gradients, creating depth against flatness. The exhibition also included mirror series where centered oval compositions reconcile opposites—masculine and feminine—symbolized by oval, rhombus, triangle, and square. Curator Silviu Pădurariu notes that painting here is a mirror, not a window. Mocanu's works echo Yayoi Kusama's 'Infinity Nets' and Anish Kapoor's 'Cloud Gate', warping reflection. Titles like 'Jupiter' and 'Saturn' allude to cosmology and mythology. His painting explores metaphysical questions of existence, being, and truth, resisting both formalism and mysticism. The curatorial text describes the image as witnessing 'sub-natural and supernatural immersions'. Mocanu's work remains elusive, rearranging terms before they can be pinned down.
