Gildas Le Reste Merges Engraving and Painting in Dual-Gallery Exhibition
Gildas Le Reste presented a series of works blurring the line between engraving and painting, inspired by the late Jean-Pierre Pincemin. The exhibition took place simultaneously at Arcuterie Galerie in Poitiers (March 22 – April 16, 2012) and Galerie Herzog in Paris (March 29 – April 21, 2012). Le Reste's modest engravings (30 x 40 cm) feature subjects like Tulipe, Paysage, Arbre, Rose, Cyclamen, and Sapin, where thick outlines obscure the image, reminiscent of photography. He applies a minimalist approach, echoing Mies van der Rohe's 'less is more,' to create narrative images where 'the viewer's eye does the rest,' as Alberto Manguel wrote in the catalogue co-published by both galleries. Larger works on paper mounted on canvas use a restricted palette with dark reserves punctuated by yellow, red, and ultramarine green, evoking ambiguous motifs like barriers, fir trees, or fences, suggesting twilight landscapes. The catalogue was co-edited by the two galleries.
