Gilberto Salvador's 1960s Censored Works Resurface in São Paulo Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Gilberto Salvador showcases two of his censored pieces from 1968, 'Um, Dois, Três' and 'Há… Há… Há…', in the exhibition 'Memórias Resistentes' at Galeria Frente in São Paulo, running from October 16 to November 16, 2021. These works were partially destroyed at the Salão de Arte Contemporânea de Santos after receiving accolades from a jury that included Aracy Amaral and Fabio Magalhães. Salvador, who sought safety during Brazil's military dictatorship following the 1964 coup, also took part in the 9th Bienal de São Paulo. Curated by Magalhães, the exhibition examines the sociopolitical turmoil of the 1960s and features 'BANG', which includes a Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph by Eddie Adams. Now at 74, Salvador feels a strong urge to display these works in light of Brazil's current political situation.
