Gilbert & George to Open Foundation in London's Spitalfields
Artists Gilbert & George (Gilbert Prousch, b. 1943; George Passmore, b. 1942) are launching a new foundation in London's East End, following Damien Hirst's Newport Street Gallery model. The project will be located in a former brewery on Heneage Street in Spitalfields, purchased last year from the estate of artist Polly Hope (d. 2013). The couple, known for their tableaux vivants since the 1970s, has lived in the area since 1969, before its gentrification. The foundation will be a non-profit promoting art within the local community, featuring free exhibitions and projects. Renovation plans include demolishing a 1970s workshop and adding a basement. An opening date has not been announced.
