Gil Joseph Wolman Retrospective Across Three French Venues
A major retrospective of Gil Joseph Wolman (1929-1995) is coproduced by Frac Bourgogne and Musée de l'Objet, spanning three venues in Dijon and Blois from June to September 2001. The exhibition, titled "Ex-positions," traces Wolman's trajectory from his early involvement with the Lettrist group founded by Isidore Isou in 1950, through his co-founding of the Lettrist International in 1952 with Guy-Ernest Debord, Serge Berna, and Jean-Louis Brau, to his expulsion in 1957 following the creation of the Situationist International. The show highlights key works such as the sound poem "Mégapneumies" (1950), the film "L'Anticoncept" (1951), and the "Art scotch" series begun in 1963, where fragmented printed matter is torn with adhesive tape and mounted on wood or canvas. Later series like "Séparations" and "Décompositions" (late 1970s) use drawn lines to cut through images and text, while the book "Duhring Duhring" (1979) rewrites Engels' "Anti-Dühring" by enclosing nouns in barred images. The retrospective also includes "Peintures dépeintes" (1991), "Inhumations" (1993), and "Voir de mémoire" (1995), the latter inviting viewers at a Schwitters exhibition at Centre Pompidou to recall paintings from labels alone. After the initial run, works from the Musée de l'Objet will be shown at Frac Bourgogne from October 13 to December 1, 2001, and vice versa from October 20 to December 30, 2001.
