Gideon Rubin's 13 Paintings Inspired by Carlo Mollino's Polaroids at Monica de Cardenas Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Gideon Rubin (Tel Aviv, 1973) presents a series of 13 small paintings at Monica de Cardenas gallery in Milan, inspired by the polaroids of Carlo Mollino (Turin, 1905–1973). The works, shown exclusively worldwide, feature delicate tones and fluid brushstrokes, with faces deliberately obscured. Rubin describes his practice as extremely minimal, focusing on materiality and the sensual experience of painting. The exhibition includes additional new works depicting anonymous female figures from behind, with braids or disheveled hair, conveying moods and emotions. Rubin first encountered Mollino's polaroids in Milan, struck by their intimate, explosive sensuality. Two of the Mollino-inspired pieces introduce imagined male figures, as Rubin believes the images should not be gender-exclusive. The show runs at the Milanese branch of Monica de Cardenas.
