Gibellina's Museum of Mediterranean Weavings Uses Art to Heal Community Crisis

institutional · 2026-04-27

In an interview with Elena Andolfi, head of education at the Museo delle Trame Mediterranee in Gibellina, Sicily, the museum's role in addressing the region's deep crisis is explored. Founded by Ludovico Corrao, the museum and Fondazione Orestiadi offer a multidisciplinary space for visual arts, decorative arts, theater, and a library, promoting peace, inclusivity, and dialogue. After the 1968 earthquake destroyed Gibellina, art and theater helped reunite the community. Post-lockdown, the museum reopened with the exhibition "Museo a cielo aperto," attracting local and national visitors. The Orestiadi Festival sold out its shows. Future plans include educational programs for families and schools, starting with a project on Pietro Consagra for his centenary, and a focus on the Orestiadi theater festival's 40th anniversary. The museum aims to become a "Museum Friendly to Children and Adolescents" with UNICEF Italy, one of the first in Italy to join this initiative.
