Gibellina opens as Italy's first Capital of Contemporary Art

festival-fair · 2026-04-26

Gibellina, the Sicilian town rebuilt after the 1968 earthquake, launches its year as Italy's first Capital of Contemporary Art on January 15, 2026. The two-day inauguration, curated by Andrea Cusumano, features exhibitions, concerts, and performances across symbolic venues. Highlights include the group show 'Colloqui: Carla Accardi, Letizia Battaglia, Renata Boero, Isabella Ducrot, Nanda Vigo' at Fondazione Orestiadi, video installations by MASBEDO and Adrian Paci at Teatro Consagra, and concerts by La Banda del Sud and Max Gazzè & Calabria Orchestra. The program, titled 'Portami il futuro,' revives the utopian vision of former mayor Ludovico Corrao, using contemporary art as a tool for social and territorial regeneration. The Ministry of Culture Alessandro Giuli attends the institutional ceremony, where the Orchestra Filarmonica del Sud (FIDES) becomes the city's resident orchestra for 2026.
