Gibellina Nuova, a newly constructed town in central Sicily, was established between 1970 and 1990 to accommodate 100,000 individuals displaced by an earthquake that struck the Belice Valley. Currently, it has a population of roughly 4,000, yet it was originally designed to support 20,000 residents, resulting in expansive, vacant squares and broad avenues. The mayor at the time, Ludovico Corrao, enlisted various postmodern Italian architects, creating an eclectic blend of surreal and classical styles. Notable structures include the orb-shaped Chiesa Madre church by Ludovico Quaroni and Luisa Anversa (1985), a sinuous glass-and-metal theater by Pietro Consagra (1976), and a pharmacy designed by Franco Purini and Laura Thermes (1980). The residential zone showcases diverse façades, ranging from Art Nouveau townhouses to Streamline Moderne designs.
