Gianni D’Urso’s Exhibition Questions Optimism Through Football Metaphors
Gianni D’Urso (born 1988 in Cisternino) presents a solo exhibition at Spazio A in Lecce, curated by Fac with text by Giuseppe Arnesano. The show borrows its title from a Tonino Guerra advertising slogan: “Gianni, l’ottimismo è il profumo della vita?” (Gianni, is optimism the perfume of life?). D’Urso’s research employs sarcastic shifts and repurposed objects from various memories, reworked synthetically. At the apartment entrance, a man suspended on a hammock signals a poetics of waiting, vital interval, and probable disillusion. The exhibition unfolds across three rooms, featuring stumbling blocks and allegories. A deflated leather football bearing the word “Futuro” (Future) highlights the precariousness faced by thousands of young people without prospects, using football as a metaphor. D’Urso draws a parallel between the sports world and the contemporary art system, a theme explored in his previous works.
