Gianni Caravaggio's Metaphysical Theater at GAM Torino

GAM Torino presents 'Gianni Caravaggio. Per analogiam', a mid-career retrospective of the Italian artist (born 1968 in Rocca San Giovanni). This is the third in a series exploring poetic concepts: the 2021 edition focused on contradiction, the 2022 'Hic sunt dracones' on metamorphosis, and now analogy. Curator Elena Volpato explains that contradiction, metamorphosis, and analogy are natural mental processes underlying artistic creation. The exhibition transforms the museum into a 'metaphysical theater', with works placed on the floor to provoke philosophical reflection on being and appearance. Caravaggio describes his work as based on universal perceptual experiences, citing a narrative of abandonment between an octopus and a squid that separate to meet on opposite sides of the globe—chosen for their sentimental sensitivity and their analogy with an arrow. Five new works were created for the show, including a black marble leaf titled 'Quando nessuno mi vede' in the museum garden, and a green marble sculpture 'Alla luce del sole' indoors. A black blanket embroidered with white stars reproduces the constellation positions over Turin on October 31 at 6 PM, creating a mirroring between microcosm and macrocosm.
