Gianni Berengo Gardin retrospective at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome

A major retrospective of Italian photographer Gianni Berengo Gardin, titled 'Vera fotografia: reportage, immagini, incontri', is on view at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome until August 28, 2016. Curated by Alessandra Mammì and Alessandra Mauro, the exhibition spans Berengo Gardin's long career, from his melancholic black-and-white images of 1950s Venice to his documentation of social change in Milan after he moved there in 1962. His work captures the harsh lives of immigrant factory workers, the anonymity of suburbs, and the tragedy of psychiatric institutions. A series on the lives of Romani people serves as a social outcry. The final section addresses the impact of large cruise ships on Venice's landscape. The exhibition's title references the stamp Berengo Gardin places on the back of each of his prints. The catalog is published by Contrasto.
