Gianluca Biscalchin's Comic Grotesque Fresco for Ora d'Aria Restaurant in Florence

other · 2026-04-27

Illustrator Gianluca Biscalchin has created a fresco for the vault of the newly reopened Ora d'Aria restaurant in Florence, located at Via dei Georgofili near the Uffizi. Biscalchin, a journalist and storyteller of Florentine origin but Milanese by adoption, jokingly calls his motifs "gastro-grottesche." The 6x6 meter ceiling decoration draws inspiration from the grotesques of the Uffizi Galleries, but replaces religious or mythological subjects with a triumph of onions, turnips, fish, partridges, and anthropomorphic pigeons—the latter an obsession of the artist. The fresco blends the serious and the playful, the ancient and the contemporary, the elegant and the bizarre. It includes details in gold leaf supplied by the historic Battiloro Manetti company, operating in Florence since the 16th century. Chef Marco Stabile, who runs Ora d'Aria, gave Biscalchin the opportunity to "exaggerate with brush and fantasy." The new menu is divided into three paths: past, present, and future. Stabile emphasized the importance of people in the restaurant's rebirth, noting that Biscalchin made the space more beautiful and lively. This is not the first time the Uffizi has entered the kitchens of starred chefs: a few months earlier, Max Alajmo dedicated a risotto to Roberto Barni's sculpture "I passi d'oro," located on the museum's facade on Via dei Georgofili.
