Gianfranco Zappettini's Analytical Painting at Galleria Mazzoleni, Turin
Galleria Mazzoleni in Turin presents a monographic exhibition of Gianfranco Zappettini (Genoa, 1939), featuring fifty works by the artist, a leading figure of analytical painting. The exhibition, curated by Alberto Fiz, occupies the ground floor of 19th-century Palazzo Panizza. Zappettini's work, characterized by blinding white surfaces and luminous presences achieved unintentionally, embodies a self-referential approach that reduces painting to its pure operation. The show runs until July 10, 2016. The London branch of Mazzoleni is concurrently dedicating a broad survey to analytical painting. The catalog essay by Fiz draws parallels to Piero Manzoni's Achromes, where canvas soaked in kaolin and glue is exhibited as is, without material manipulation. Zappettini pushes this autoreferentiality to extremes, investigating the very reasons for painting's existence.
