Gianfranco Meggiato's Quantum Sculptures at Valley of the Temples

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Thirteen monumental sculptures by Venetian artist Gianfranco Meggiato (born 1963) are on view at the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, Sicily, from July 28, 2021, to January 4, 2022. The solo exhibition, titled 'L'uomo quantico, non c'è futuro senza memoria' (The Quantum Man, There Is No Future Without Memory), features four new site-specific works made of resistant metal alloys that contrast with the ancient stone of the Greek temples. The sculptures engage with quantum mechanics, using swirling forms and reflective surfaces to interact with sunlight. Key works include 'Lo specchio dell'Assoluto' near the Temple of Juno, 'Uomo quantico' by the Temple of Concordia, and 'Sfera Aquarius' and 'Quanto di luce' at the Temple of Zeus. Meggiato, who debuted in Venice at age 16, draws inspiration from Brancusi, Henry Moore, and Calder, and explores the concept of 'introsculpture,' inviting viewers to look into the interior of his works through a balance of voids and solids. The exhibition aims to demonstrate that Italy's archaeological heritage can host contemporary art, bridging past and future.
