Gianfranco Meggiato's Monumental Sculptures Invade Pisa

exhibition · 2026-04-27

From October 22 to December 4, the city of Pisa hosts the exhibition "Gianfranco Meggiato. Il respiro della forma," featuring 14 large-scale sculptures by the Venetian artist. Curated by Riccardo Ferrucci and Alessandro Romanini, the show is spread across historic sites including Piazza dei Miracoli, Piazza dei Cavalieri, San Paolo a Ripa d'Arno, and the Church of Santa Maria della Spina. Key works include "Lo Specchio dell'Assoluto" in Piazza dei Miracoli, "L'Uomo Quantico" (a five-meter-tall sculpture) in Piazza dei Cavalieri, and "Oltre" in San Paolo a Ripa d'Arno. Inside the church, 11 medium-sized pieces such as "Germinazione," "Dio è Madre," and "Mondo Interiore" explore human fragility and connection. The exhibition is promoted by the Comune di Pisa with patronage from Regione Toscana, Scuola Normale Superiore, and Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, organized by C.R.A. in collaboration with Casa d'Arte San Lorenzo. A QR code at each site provides access to a virtual map explaining the sculptures. Meggiato, born in Venice in 1963, studied at the Istituto Statale d'Arte di Venezia and has participated in the Venice Biennale in 2011 and 2013. His public installations address social issues such as anti-mafia, cooperation, and violence against women, earning him an Icomos-UNESCO award for blending ancient and contemporary art.
