Gianfranco Maraniello on Museums, Malraux, and Institutional Critique at Festival Filosofia

Gianfranco Maraniello, director of the Mart Museum in Rovereto, was the only art professional invited to speak at the 2017 Festival Filosofia, whose theme was the arts. In an interview with Marco Enrico Giacomelli on Artribune, Maraniello discussed the relationship between philosophy and art, the role of museums, and the influence of André Malraux. He argued that specialization has kept art and philosophical reflection apart. Regarding festivals, he noted that while disciplines like philosophy and theater suit festival formats, an art festival risks becoming a festival about art, distanced from its object. Maraniello's lecture, titled "Museo. Luogo di apparizione delle arti," explored how museums do not merely host artworks but constitute them, referencing Malraux's idea that artifacts become art only through the museum. He emphasized that contemporary art museums are shaped by artists' critiques, from Institutional Critique in the 1970s to current practices where artists control the perception and documentation of their work. Maraniello stressed that museums must recognize their own conventions, such as the mediating role of labels and the risk of didactic activities trivializing art. He concluded that younger artists often make their creative process and its documentation coincide with the artwork itself.
