Giancarlo Politi receives honorary degree from Accademia di Macerata

Giancarlo Politi, founder of Flash Art magazine, was awarded an honorary degree by the Accademia di Macerata. Politi launched Flash Art fifty years ago in Macerata, printing it at the Salesiani press to keep costs low. A poet from Trevi, he used his severance pay to create the magazine before 1968, handling everything from travel and writing to layout and distribution. He famously drove a van to Kassel with thousands of copies and printed fake Biennale tickets. His provocative editorials, such as 'Dico No alla Biennale,' and his letters to the editor defined a distinctive style. In the mid-1950s, Politi won the quiz show Lascia o raddoppia? in the poetry category, the same year John Cage appeared as a mushroom expert and played an empty bathtub for host Mike Bongiorno. Flash Art became Italy's only contemporary art information source, fostering movements and debates. Key figures like Germano Celant, Achille Bonito Oliva, Jannis Kounellis, Jeff Koons, Maurizio Cattelan, and Massimiliano Gioni matured through its pages. Helena Kontova, Politi's lifelong partner, brought international reach. The magazine's Helvetica logo was designed by Getulio Alviani. The honorary degree was conferred by the Accademia di Macerata, recognizing Politi as a non-institutional, situationist figure.
