Giancarlo Politi, Founder of Influential Flash Art Magazine, Passes Away

other · 2026-03-21

Giancarlo Politi, the publisher, poet, and art critic who established Flash Art, one of the most significant international contemporary art publications, has died. His passing occurred in Milan on February 24, 2026. Born in Trevi in 1937, Politi played a central role in the art world for more than fifty years, substantially shaping the contemporary art system. He launched Flash Art in 1967, creating one of the earliest global editorial platforms focused on contemporary art. The magazine grew to include numerous international editions, such as English, Italian, Czech-Slovak, French, Polish, Chinese, Spanish, German, and Russian versions. Its pages were instrumental in the emergence and establishment of pivotal late-20th-century movements, including Arte Povera and Transavanguardia. Flash Art also served as a discovery and launching platform for many influential artists, critics, and curators, such as Maurizio Cattelan, Jeff Koons, Marina Abramović, Germano Celant, Massimiliano Gioni, and Francesco Bonami. Through its content and ethos, the publication educated generations of key figures in the current art landscape. Helena Kontova, Politi's life partner and co-publisher, was crucial in developing the magazine's international identity. The editorial legacy continues today with Gea Politi and Cristiano Seganfreddo, maintaining a cultural continuity that has become a contemporary art dynasty. Politi also created the Art Diary, an historic international art system guide once called 'the Bible of art' by Andy Warhol. He remained engaged in cultural discourse through features like 'Letters to the Editor' and later 'Amarcord,' reaffirming the value of critical stance. Described as restless, ironic, and sometimes paradoxical, Politi possessed rare energy and an outsized presence—marked by tireless vitality, visionary stubbornness, and intellectual curiosity that turned art into a life method before a profession. He lived for art, navigating his era with a free and countercultural spirit. His death marks the end of an epoch but leaves a vibrant legacy: an approach to art as necessity, urgency, and a form of existence.
