Giancarlo Iliprandi retrospective at ADI Design Museum Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The ADI Design Museum in Milan hosts 'Design per comunicare', a major exhibition celebrating the centenary of Giancarlo Iliprandi (1925–2016), curated by Monica Fumagalli Iliprandi and Giovanni Baule. Iliprandi, a Compasso d'Oro career award winner in 2011, was a master of graphic design who worked at the Rinascente advertising office alongside Bruno Munari and Max Huber, directed art for magazines like Abitare, Interni, and Popular Photography Italia, and created iconic logos for brands and museums. The exhibition highlights lesser-known facets of his creativity, including product design. Among the thematic sections are sketches for fashion, sport, and theater; photographic books; record and magazine covers; social campaign posters; and furniture and lighting designs. Notable is the Spirale lamp for Stilnovo (1969), a dynamic aluminum sheet. Iliprandi also designed the Stilnovo logo featuring an 'o' resembling a switch, and for kitchen manufacturer RB (later Rossana), he created branding and iconic kitchens like Isola and Arcipelago, the latter exhibited at MoMA in 'Italy: a new domestic landscape' curated by Emilio Ambasz. The exhibition also features his independent photography and drawing, and socially engaged posters such as 'Basta una pillola' (birth control) and 'Stop visual pollution', published in a 2006 Corraini volume. Luciano Galimberti, president of the Industrial Design Association, notes Iliprandi's role as a weaver of relationships across design disciplines.
