Gian Maria Tosatti Wins 2020 Frescobaldi Prize

award · 2026-04-27

Gian Maria Tosatti (Rome, 1980) has been awarded the 2020 edition of the Premio Frescobaldi, a biennial prize established in 2013 by the Frescobaldi family. His winning work, "Cattività," is a site-specific environmental installation at the CastelGiocondo estate in Montalcino, where the Brunello wine is produced. The jury—comprising Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (President, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo), Ralph Rugoff (Director, Hayward Gallery, London), and Rina Carvajal (Director and Curator, Museum of Art and Design, Miami Dade College)—praised Tosatti's ability to generate complex associations with minimal, poetic means. The installation activates latent meanings of domestic architecture and historical furnishings, including Art Nouveau floral murals, encouraging reflection on collaboration between humanity and nature. The prize, conceived and directed by Tiziana Frescobaldi and curated by Ludovico Pratesi, was delayed due to the pandemic. Tosatti was a finalist alongside Erica Mahinay and Andrew Dadson. The work is viewable by appointment at the Montalcino estate.
